If you are the type of person who enjoys having a beautiful landscape, but without the hassle of constant maintenance and upkeep, a low maintenance landscape is for you. Creating one is no simple task, but the dividends pay off for years to come as you enjoy spending time in your landscape, without spending as much time on it. Wouldn’t you like to spend more time with your kids on the lawn, rather than keeping up on a list of landscaping chores? There are many ways you can do this, from installing multi-use, functional pieces of landscaping, to engaging in specific routine maintenance that allows for little to no work. There are many pieces of a low maintenance landscape that all come together as one cohesive unit, to save you time. Luckily, we are here to go over them all.
Create Outdoor Living Spaces
You know what an outdoor patio does not have? Grass, and the less yard you have, the less there is to take care of. While this may be an extremely simple concept, the more of your yard that you can fill up with landscaping, enhancements, or hardscapes, the less turf you have to take care of. We all know that lawns require a myriad of services, from mowing, to fertilization. The less of these you have to perform, the more money and time you will save. Not to mention that an outdoor living space has its own benefits, from hosting, to increasing your property value.
Utilize Low Maintenance Plants
One common mistake we see with people trying to create a low maintenance landscape is the use of plant material that has to be maintained and replaced frequently. A good example of a low maintenance plant would be lavender, it provides bright color, but also will last year round, and does not need to be watered any more than normal. Additionally it is a natural bug repellent. What did we say earlier? Multi-use functional pieces of landscaping. Most perennials will act in a similar way, so look for them over annuals.
Engage in Leaf Removal
One super simple way to avoid future problems in the winter is to remove the leaves from your yard. Dead leaves can cause rot in your grass over the course of the winter. You do not want to be doing anything extra in your yard that you don’t have to, especially revitalizing a dead lawn.
Get an Automatic Sprinkler System
While a larger initial investment, an automatic sprinkler system not only improves your irrigation, but it saves you so much time and money long term. Rather than spending an hour of your time each week hand watering, you can set your sprinkler system to use the optimal amount of water, saving you money. This rings especially true for larger lawns.
